THE VISITATION OF THE GODS (Reflection)
The story "The Visitation of the gods" by Gilda Cordero-Fernando shows how unequal and unfair life is. Even there are people who act in a right way, still there are people who will block their way. It is the life of the public schools that I experienced once before. Preparing our rooms and some foods for the visitors from the DepEd. It is the life of our beloved teachers who sometimes do not receive equal treatment from other teachers. I realized that being a teacher is not really an easy task to do, teaching the students and understand what the attitude of their co-teacher is.
The story shows how difficult in sustaining one's interest in improving the standards of education in the country specially in the public schools. Because in the end, it is always the children who will suffer. The story shows the reality in what is really happening when it comes to pretending. Actually, one of the cultures we have until now is that, everytime that someone with a higher position visits schools, we tend to exert much effort than usual just to please them.
The story is based on the real life scenario. It shows the educational system here in the Philippines. The practices done by a school administration and staffs when there is a coming evaluation are being shown in the story. They made so much preparations and do their job well only when there are evaluators to get higher rates which is not a good habit. I like it because it could bring the officials and the administration of the DepEd into a realization that there must be changes in the system. The story is not only focusing on the mistakes but it also shows those few people who are still loyal with their work.
In the story, it also shows the hospitality of the Filipinos in their homes or in everywhere else. The story described the management of their educational system. In where they tend to be always prepare and pretend to have everything even if they don't have, just to impress their visitors. Above all these, Ms. Noel in the story tried to be loyal in her work. She did her best to influenced her colleagues for a change, but they didn't.
For me, these practices are not actually big deal, i mean, it is okay to prepare the students, the classroom, and even the school. Just like what we do in our homes when we are expecting visitors, isn't we prepare?, we prepare delicious foods, we clean our houses, and many more. Because it is our tradition as Filipinos, we do these not only to please them, but to make them feel that they are welcome. In the story, i am favor with the mindset of preparing, but no to pretending. I am always agree with the phrase "Be yourself". We don't need to pretend just to please anybody, all we need to do is to be true. Another things is that, i don't agree in the mentality of some Filipinos in terms of competition. For me, the most important thing is helping each other toward success in life and even in profession. If we true to ourselves, if we are loyal in our profession, and if we have the heart that is full of humility, God himself will promote us in the field that we are in.
